The Airports Authority of India (AAI) has set up an electric vehicle charging station at the airside of Chennai airport for charging ground handling vehicles and passenger shuttle buses.
Set up by Indian Oil Corporation Limited, the charging station has a DC charger and one AC Type 2 charger. The charging points and charging capacity (up to 120KW) would be increased in line with demand, said a statement.
The chargers can be operated through a mobile app or a RFID card.
The charging station not only helps decrease the carbon footprint inside the airport but is also cost effective. It is a boon to the vehicles plying inside the airport as they are not roadworthy and hence the liquid fuel has to be brought and stored separately for their consumption.
The AAI has requested airlines and ground handling firms to switch to electric vehicles.
Chennai airport director Sharad Kumar and executive director and state head of Indian Oil Corporation Ltd V C Asokan inaugurated the facility.
The facility is in line with the country’s commitment towards net zero in the COP-26 meeting held at Glasgow.
