In a push to e-buses, the Gurugram Metropolitan Development Authority (GMDA) has decided to install 44 slow-charging stations and six fast-charging stations at the Sector 10 bus depot.

Officials claimed the six-acre bus depot would go fully electric and ensure each bus gets charged in one-and-a-half hours at the fast-charging stations or six hours at the slow-charging stations.

Officials decided to convert the Sector 10 bus depot into an electric bus depot at the GMDA core planning cell meeting on Tuesday. The decision comes after a proposal to add 50 electric buses to the Gurugram Metropolitan City Bus Limited (GMCBL) fleet by the middle of 2023.

Currently, 150 CNG-based buses operate in the city.

“The existing city bus depot in Sector 10 will be converted into an e-bus charging station and used for charging and parking e-buses. In the first phase, we will set up 50 charging stations,” said GC Yadav, administration manager, GMCBL. It would take two months to complete the tender process and six months to complete construction. The estimated project cost is nearly Rs 9.3 crores.

The buses, currently running in the city, will be parked on a new three-acre bus depot adjoining the existing depot.

Mani Ram Sharma, chief general manager, GMDA mobility division, said, “It may take six months to execute the e-bus depot project, required to be completed before the e-buses start plying.”

In addition to e-bus charging stations, the works outlined for the e-bus depot include a supplementary electric sub-station, a fire detection alarm system, CCTV cameras, and charging bays.
