ACI: the circulating fleet continues to grow in November while the decline in the second-hand market continues

07.12.2022

The second-hand car market is still suffering, which in November reported yet another negative result, with an 8.3% drop in transfers of ownership net of mini-transfers (temporary transfers in the name of the dealer awaiting of resale to the end customer) compared to the same month in 2021. For every 100 new cars, 198 used cars were sold in November and 205 in the first eleven months of the year. However, the increase in minitransfers should be noted, which closed the November balance sheet with a positive monthly change of 6.3%.

Nothing new on the used market as regards power supplies. The traditional diesel and petrol engines are still in first place (albeit with three percentage points less in November for diesels and a slight increase of two percentage points for petrol cars). The share of petrol hybrids instead stands at 3.7%, while a second-hand electric market is still struggling to take off. Finally, in the minipasses, diesel cars excel at the top of the ranking (albeit down from 54.8% share in November 2021 to the current 51.4% in November 2022), while the incidence of petrol hybrids reaches 6 .3%.

On the contrary, there was a positive balance for the transfer of ownership of motorcycles which, net of mini-transfers, recorded an increase of 4.2% in November compared to the same month in 2021.

In total, in the first eleven months of 2022 compared to the same period of 2021, net ownership transfers recorded decreases of 10.7% for cars, 5.2% for motorcycles and 8.7% for all vehicles .

The data is reported in the latest monthly bulletin “Auto-Trend”, the statistical analysis carried out by the Automobile Club of Italy on the PRA data, which can be consulted on the website www.aci.it.

In November, the radiation of cars was largely negative, with a drop of 29.1% compared to November 2021, with only 79,983 cases (the lowest number ever for November) compared to 112,738 in the same month of 2021. The monthly unit replacement rate therefore stands at 0.68 (86 were deregistered for every 100 new cars), rising overall to 0.79 in the first eleven months of the year. The cancellations of motorcycles also contracted in November, registering a negative monthly variation of 4.9% .

From January to November 2022 compared to the same period of 2021, radiation recorded decreases of 29.6% for passenger cars, 3.2% for motorcycles and 27.1% for all vehicles.
