Euro NCAP: five stars won by 11 models

07.12.2022

Of the fourteen cars tested in the eighth test series EuroNCAP 2022, eleven get the maximum rating of five stars, one less, four, for the Peugeot 408, Citroen C4 and C4 X.

Only 3 of the 14 cars tested in the 2022 eighth series did not achieve the five-star safety rating, the grouping considered includes three Chinese cars, city cars, family cars, off-road vehicles, minivans, pick-ups and four premium vehicles including the luxurious Lucid Air, equipped with devices that use the latest safety technology, achieves results comparable to those found in cars such as the Tesla Model S or other high-end vehicles, such as the Lexus RX or Land Rover Discovery Sport.

Lucid, headquartered in the United States, is an exception in a year in which the number of new Chinese brands entering the European market has been remarkable. Chery, with the small OMODA5 off-road vehicle, and SAIC’s Maxus with the MIFA 9, a large minivan: both obtained five stars. This year, then, we must record a marked acceleration in the offer of electric models. Volkswagen ID.Buzz, for example, is the all-electric version of a large MPV. Bucking the trend are the combustion engine ‘twins’, the Ford Ranger and VW Amarok pick-ups, which combine traditional powertrains with up-to-date safety technologies.

“2022 was one of the busiest years for Euro NCAP as it tested new car manufacturers and, above all, new technologies – said Angelo Sticchi Damiani, president of the Automobile Club of Italy. However, twenty-five years after its debut, Euro NCAP is preparing ever higher safety levels, so much so that the more restrictive protocols, which we will apply in 2023, will constitute a real challenge for the automotive industry”.

Four stars for Škoda Octavia, as well as Ford Puma and Volkswagen Touran, (both updates of previous car revaluations), which, however, lost a star due to the adult occupant protection test. Same four-star rating for Peugeot 408, Citroen C4 and C4 X.
