At first it wasn’t necessary, but now it is: Tesla is again installing radar sensors in its vehicles.
The manufacturer Tesla has not made it public, rather it has the FCC (Federal Communications Commission) published: Tesla plans to install a radar in its vehicles from mid-January. Apparently it’s about improving the autopilot.
Tesla is in the crosshairs of criticism because of the Autopilot assistance system in its two forms: Enhanced Autopilot and Full Selfdriving (FSD). The systems created dead and especially the terms play a role in this. They would mislead consumers. They are Level 2 systems, but introduce themselves as Level 5 systems.
Every few years, Elon Musk announces that Tesla is now ready to map autonomous driving. That promise, which has been around for over a decade, has never been fulfilled. Most recently, Musk had to admit that it still takes time.
The radar should now fix it, because the Tesla vehicles are currently being used by the authorities checked. So far, only cameras were installed whose images are interpreted by the AI. An approach that’s not unique to Tesla, but only Tesla sells these vehicles. Most other companies rely on the very expensive one lidar.
Until last year, radar sensors were installed and there were also ultrasonic sensors in some models. It remains unclear which radar will now find its way into the models. However, 76-77 GHz radar was specified in the documents. Therefore, professionals believe it is an application in the field of autopilot. According to Tesla, the use of the radar should be treated confidentially. This confidentiality ended on December 7, but still applies to the radar model.
