The Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation (BMC) on Friday deployed 60 light commercial vehicles (LCVs) to collect segregated waste (wet and dry in separate containers) from 60 markets, vending zones and commercial places.

These vehicles to be operated by different NGO partners, will collect waste from the doorstep daily between 3pm and 11 pm. The BMC said segregated waste in all markets except Unit-I and Unit-IV will be collected by the time the market is closed.

In south-east zone, for 25 wards, 31 LCVs have been given, while for north zone, 17 vehicles have been deployed in 21 wards. In south-west zone, 57 vehicles have been allotted for total 21 wards. Each vehicle will have a helper besides a driver. Except Unit-I market area, which is the biggest one in the city in terms of vegetable vendors, grocery outlets and daily needs, all other markets have been allotted maximum two vehicles. Unit-I market has been allotted three LCVs. The number of trips a market will require is based on a day’s generation of waste. “The LCVs’ waste cabin has two compartments — one for wet lot and another for the dry garbage,” said BMC deputy commissioner (sanitation) Suvendu Sahu.
