In a tug-of-war at an in-house trade fair, VW boss Oliver Blume has to settle for a stalemate. Much to the amusement of the visitors, he was unable to pull his fellow board member Thomas Schäfer – responsible for the Volkswagen brand – over the line in mid-October during a small competition at a supplier’s stand. “That’s just how he is, Oli,” they say at VW. Approachable and friendly – and that makes it very different from its predecessors.
At the beginning of September, the 54-year-old took over the management of Europe’s largest car manufacturer from Herbert Diess, which changed the mood in the group abruptly. “Blume listens, doesn’t come with a ready-made opinion, and he’s friendly to deal with,” report employees from personal meetings with the new boss.
