More vehicle scrapping facilities in Noida soon

NOIDA: The transport department officials on Wednesday said the UP government recently approved the scrapping policy, and more Registered Vehicle Scrapping Facilities (RVSFs) will be coming up in Noida soon.

The city now has two such centres-Maruti Suzuki Toyotsu India’s (MSTI’s) RVSF in Sector 80, Noida, and Mahindra MSTC Recycling’s RVSF in Ecotech 1, Greater Noida. The government will also give a 15% tax rebate if a person gets an old car scrapped and gets a new one. Noida has 1.2 lakh old vehicles.

Siyaram Verma, assistant regional transport officer (ARTO-administration), Noida, said, “The owners of private vehicles need to get their old vehicle scrapped and show the certificate at the time of registration of the new vehicle. The transport department will give 15% rebate on taxes in such cases. The certificate will be valid for one year.”

For commercial vehicle, the discount is 10% on taxes.

The NGT has directed the state government to stop such End-of-Life Vehicles (ELVs) from plying on the roads. On September 23, 2021, the road transport and highways ministry issued a notification on the Motor Vehicles (Registration and Functions of Vehicle Scrapping Facility) Rules for scrapping the ELVs that do not have a valid registration or are declared unfit by automated fitness centres.

MSTI, a joint venture of Maruti Suzuki and Toyota Tsusho group, started the RSVF in Sector 80 on November 24, 2021. Spread over 10,993 sqm, the facility can scrap and recycle over 2,000 ELVs in a month. The second RSVF with Mahindra MSTC Recycling, a joint venture of Mahindra and MSTC, opened in Ecotech 1 in January 2018. The recycling of ELVs takes places in many phases. The vehicles’ tyres, CNG kits, battery, fuel tank, engine, windshield, doors, bonnet, bumper, headlights, seats, steering, dashboard, floor mat, roofing and interior parts get systematically removed at various stations. The vehicle’s frame is then lifted by a crane and put inside the recycling machine, which dismantles it and produces a square-shaped recycled block.
