The Indian automobile industry its highest ever annual domestic passenger vehicle sales last year. A total of 3.793 million or 37.93 lakh units were sold in the country in 2022, which is 23.1 per cent higher than the preceding year. Major four-wheeler companies like Tata Motors (58.2%), Kia India (40.2%) and Toyota Kirloskar Motor (22.6%) recorded the highest growth in annual sales.
Meanwhile Skoda Auto Volkswagen India was the biggest grower amongst the top companies, recording a growth of 123.3 per cent. Maruti Suzuki continues to reign the Indian car market, selling over 15.8 lakh cars in the country in 2022 as against the 13.68 lakh units sold in 2021, recording a year-on-year growth of 15.4 per cent.
In the month of December 2022 alone, the Indian auto industry recorded a total sale of over 2.28 lakh units, 3.6 per cent up from the 2.20 lakh units sold in the same month in 2021. The growth in sales numbers highlights the increasing demand for cars in India, as well as the slightly better semiconductor chip situation.
A host of high-selling new cars were introduced in the country in 2022, including some big launches like the Mahindra Scorpio-N, Maruti Suzuki Grand Vitara, Toyota Hyryder, Toyota Innova Hycross, and so on. With the Auto Expo 2023 set to take place later this month, more new and exciting cars are expected to debut in the country this year.
