People Digest: Apollo names new Japan chairman, MUFG picks head of APAC fund finance

Alternative asset manager Apollo has announced the appointment of its new Japan chairman while MUFG Investor Services has named a new head of fund finance for the Asia Pacific region.

Apollo names Tatsuo Tanaka as Japan chairman

Global alternative asset manager Apollo has announced the appointment of Tatsuo Tanaka as Japan chairman, who will help drive the firm’s strategy to partner with Japanese institutions.

Tanaka, a 50-year veteran of the banking and finance industry in Japan, will continue to support the entirety of Apollo’s asset management platform, including its equity business, which is led by Tetsuji Okamoto.

Tanaka held various senior positions in leading financial institutions in the country, including as Deputy President of MUFG Bank and Mitsubishi UFJ Financial Group, Chairman of Union Bank and, most recently, Chairman of Citigroup Japan.

Apollo CEO Marc Rowan said the new role is a reflection of the importance that the firm places on Japan and the growth opportunities it sees in the country. It is also another step in Apollo’s recent expansion in the country.

Earlier this year, Sumitomo Mitsui Trust Holdings and Sumitomo Mitsui Trust Bank committed $1.5 billion to invest side-by-side with Apollo and Athene, Apollo’s retirement business, in a proprietary portfolio of diversified alternative assets.

As of September 30, 2022, Apollo had approximately $523 billion of assets under management.

MUFG Investor Services names Fi Dinh as head of APAC fund finance

MUFG Investor Services, a division of Mitsubishi UFJ Financial Group, has announced the appointment of Fi Dinh as head of Fund Finance for Asia Pacific, underlining the firm’s plans for continued growth in the region.

In her new role, Dinh will focus on expanding the fund financing business of MUGF Investor Services in APAC and supporting the overall growth of the global asset servicing and fund administration business.

With over $770 billion in assets under administration, MUFG Investor Services is one of the top fund administrators globally. It is a division of MUFG, one of the largest banks in the world with $3.3 trillion in assets.
