Nashik: Power generation at the Nashik Thermal Power Station of Mahagenco has increased with the quality of coal supplied to the unit from the headquarters improving. In December, the power generation at the station was affected because of the poor quality coal supply.
“There is an issue with the quality of coal being provided to NTPS generation sets. Hence, the power generation had dropped. It had gone as low as 170 megwatts (MW). The power generation has improved from the range of 170-210 MW in December-end to 220-290 MW now,” said a senior officer from NTPS, Eklahara power plant.
TOI had in its December 30 edition last year had highlighted the issue of poor quality of coal supply.
The officials said the calorific value (CV) of coal received then was 2,500 Kcal per kg, while the generation set is designed for 5,000 Kcal per kg. This had resulted in lesser power generation at the station.
“We raised the issue with the senior officials. The proportion of good quality coal has increased and it has a direct impact on the quantum of power generation. We are still far from generating 400 MW plus power from three generation sets with 210 MW capacity each. We are expecting further improvement in the situation,” the officer added.
A senior officer from the transmission company – Mahatransco – said there is no forced load shedding in the rural areas of Nashik as of now.
During December-end, the peak demand of the district was around 1,600 MW and the availability was about 1,400 MW, given the problems at NTPS and limitations in drawing power from other sources including extra-high voltage transmission company substations at Babhaleshwar (Ahmednagar) and Dhule.
“The peak power demand across the state has dropped by over 1,000 MW due to fall in temperature. Besides, the relief from the power generation has helped ensure load-shedding-free supply to the consumers,” the officer said.
