Anonymization of traffic data at the University of Bamberg

Traffic data is the modern treasure. Lifting it is a special art in the face of the necessary data protection. The University of Bamberg has accepted this.

Again and again, specialists and researchers demand that more is needed Data for traffic. Not only to better manage the flow of traffic, but also, for example, to fulfill the dream of autonomous driving to make come true. With the data they can AIs in the cars trained or be informed about traffic events.

The University of Bamberg has received a grant of four million euros from the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) to finance the data anonymization project until 2025. However, it is not only about car traffic, but also about the usage behavior of public transport, bicycles or pedestrian traffic. The keyword is intermodal mobility.

Space is limited, especially in urban areas, so good organization based on reliable data is required. It is only possible to collect this with anonymization, since otherwise one could draw conclusions about the people, which would allow one to learn a lot about the people.

The project called “Explainable Anonymization of Intermodal Mobility Data” aims to develop these techniques related to mobility data. The aim is to use the information to better identify mobility needs and adjust them accordingly. Prof. Dr. Daniela Nicklas leads the project, which focuses on the clinic environment and the city. Here one wants to give municipalities and the economy a means to collect the data with privacy. Furthermore, it should be about new applications for medical care, which was previously not possible due to a lack of privacy. This includes the use of special beds, wheelchairs or cleaning products. A pilot project is planned in the city center from 2024, whereby IT technology and the willingness to trust the people of Bamberg will be recorded.

In addition to the University of Bamberg, other companies and diagnostic centers are involved in the project and linked to the ASmart C>ity Initiative project.
