With vehicles running on city roads and highways sans the high security registration plates and illegal number plates, the Road Transport Authority (RTA) personnel have decided to conduct special drive from January 20 against the illegal number plates.

The RTA personnel observed that motorists are using defective or fancy number plates in various parts of Vizag city and most of the violators are youths.

We have decided to remove number plates displaying unnecessary/unauthorized names, emblems and names on the number plates and the fancy number plates. The offenders will be charged under Section 50 and 51 of the Central Motor Vehicles Rules-1989, which provides for a penalty of Rs1,000.“We will seize the vehicles plying with fancy number plates and will release the vehicles only after the owner of the vehicle has to pay the fine and install the high security registration number plates,” said Deputy Transport Commissioner, Vizag, GC Rajaratnam.

The police and the RTA personnel also observed that the absence of radium stickers or reflectors was the reason for the road mishaps during the winter season. “A number of vehicles, especially tractor trailers, which are plying on city roads and National Highway-16 in city limits don’t have reflectors. During the dense fog, they are difficult to spot, especially those parked on the roadside and the absence of the radium stickers on vehicles has caused road crashes,” they added.

“We will launch a special drive to impose fines against the vehicles plying without reflective tape on them,” Rajaratnam added.
