Airbus has developed a system that allows the plane to land without human control: DragonFly.
The system is only intended for emergencies and should then be the next Airport target and land there. It is a further development of the autopilot, which has long been part of the equipment in aircraft. Even landings in poor visibility can be left to the computer.
With DragonFly, however, the aircraft should be able to take over the entire procedure at any time. the Testing this is already underway and will be carried out by the subsidiary UpNext. The system is also able to perform evasive maneuvers during flight. It is fed with flight routes, weather and other data. In this way, it is also able to carry out communication with the relevant authorities. The question of communication with air traffic control is still open, as this has to be verbalized.
The name DragonFly, i.e. dragonfly, refers to the animal’s ability to continuously adjust its flight path. This owes that insect its eyesight, with which it can orientate itself.
The tests are to take place for another three months, which also implies demonstrations. The system’s acoustic warnings are already being implemented in real flights, such as at an airport in France.
