The BMW Group and Solid Power have announced the extension of their joint development partnership, which will now incorporate an R&D license to help them carry out their next steps. With the license, BMW plans to establish an all-solid-state battery (ASSB) property line in its Cell Manufacturing Competence Center based in Parsdorf – a city near Munich, Germany.
Expanding the partnership provides a series of mutual benefits for BMW and Solid Power. Here, each company will conduct complementary cell development manufacturing activities at their own facilities to advance all-solid-state cell design and manufacturing experience. Prior to the installation of the BMW Group’s prototype line, its personnel will work with Solid Power to optimize several cell manufacturing processes.
Further along the partnership’s timeline, Solid Power expects to deliver full-scale automotive cells to BMW in 2023. The OEM will then utilize these cells for testing purposes before launching a demonstrator vehicle with ASSB technology ahead of 2025.
