MYSURU: Registration of electric vehicles is steadily increasing in the district of Chamarajanagar with many citizens opting for these vehicles over those that run on fossil fuels.
Last three years have seen a jump in numbers with as many as 518 electric vehicles being registered. This development comes amidst the authorities focusing on the needs of e-vehicle users by creating charging points.
Though the people are embracing a greener commuting option, the lack of supporting infrastructure to give a push to such an option, like the delay in the establishment of e-charging stations, had discouraged buyers in Chamarajanagar, however, that has now been addressed.
Speaking to TOI, Chamarajanagar regional transport officer Sudhamani said that registration for e-vehicles has gradually increased in the past two years in the district. As these vehicles are environmentally-friendly, the transport department has also initiated measures to encourage buyers by facilitating the strengthening of infrastructure for these electric vehicles.
Chamarajanagar division CESC executive engineer Vasanthkumar told TOI that the division has decided to set up such 20 charging points for two-wheelers, three-wheelers and four-wheelers under public private partnership.
“The power utility has identified locations for 16 charging points, including its six locations. Of the 16, four of them will come up along the national highways, remaining 12 points are identified as taluk and district headquarters. Work on ten charging points will be taken up shortly,” he said.
Of the 518 vehicles registered in the border district, 512 of them are two-wheelers, five cars and one goods auto vehicle. As per year-wise details, as many as 48 were registered in 2021, 219 in 2022, and 245 in 2022-23 as per latest report from the transport department.
As there are not many reputed e-vehicles outlets in Chamarajanagar, many of them purchase from Mysuru.
People who have bought two-wheelers e-vehicles are charging from the facility at their homes, but there are no charging points for four-wheeler e-vehicles thus discouraging many buyers from opting for four-wheelers in the district. Even the high cost of these electric cars are dissuading buyers from choosing these vehicles. As there are no charging units for four-wheeler e-vehicles in the city, people are not opting to buy these electric cars, said some residents.
But once the charging units are established and infrastructure strengthened, the sale of e-vehicles would pick up further in the region, said Uma Mahesh, a e-vehicle sales representative.
