The Volkswagen brand expects to sell more electric cars in Europe faster than previously planned. In 2030, “probably 80 percent of all vehicles delivered in Europe” will be fully electric, said VW brand boss Thomas Schäfer to the Handelsblatt. Two years ago, VW had set the target of 70 percent.
Volkswagen no longer wants to sell new combustion engines in Europe from 2033. With 572,100 purely electric vehicles, the entire VW Group delivered around a quarter more electric cars in the past year than in 2021. The group’s main brand delivered 330,000 fully electric vehicles worldwide last year, which corresponded to a good seven percent of total sales. According to a report by “Automobilwoche”, in Europe it was just over ten percent.
The European Union actually wants to ban the sale of new diesel and petrol cars from 2035. Last week, however, Federal Transport Minister Volker Wissing (FDP) questioned Germany’s approval of the end of combustion engines in the EU.
Wissing reiterated the demand that the EU Commission must submit a proposal on how climate-neutral synthetic fuels can be used in combustion engines after 2035. In addition to Germany, countries such as Italy, Poland and Bulgaria recently did not want to agree to the plans.
