New Volkswagen Tiguan Black Edition: prices and specs revealed

The current Volkswagen Tiguan is nearing the end of its life, and to give the SUV a boost before its replacement arrives later this year, a new Black Edition version has been announced. Positioned above the Tiguan R-Line, the new model costs from £37,325 and combines the R-Line’s sporty appearance with a host of extra standard kit.

With the same sculpted front bumper and larger lower grille, the Black Edition looks similar to the R-Line – albeit with dark trim elements and black door mirror caps. A set of black 20-inch alloys completes the makeover, with metallic paint and a panoramic sunroof also included in the price.

LED headlights are fitted as standard, along with a fully digital instrument panel and a larger 9.2-inch infotainment screen than lesser Tiguans. The system is equipped with Volkswagen’s Discover Media navigation, and other luxuries – such as heated front seats, a DAB radio and adaptive cruise control – are thrown in as well.

Offered with five powertrain options, the Tiguan Black Edition costs from £37,325 (£900 more than the R-Line) in entry-level 1.5-litre petrol guise. This serves up 148bhp, with a 2.0-litre diesel option sitting alongside this with the same power output.

Later down the line, a trio of 4MOTION four-wheel drive options will become available, each with 2.0-litre engines. Buyers can choose from either 148bhp or 197bhp diesel motors with this drivetrain, or a 187bhp petrol unit. Whichever you pick, Volkswagen’s seven-speed DSG gearbox is fitted as standard.

The new model joins other Black Edition SUVs in Volkswagen’s line-up, including the smaller T-Cross and flagship Touareg. As part of the Black Edition’s release, Volkswagen is offering a £1,750 deposit contribution as part of its in-house personal contract plan (PCP), which includes free servicing for two years. The deal also spans across the T-Cross, Taigo and T-Roc crossovers
