Honda Motorcycle & Scooter India enters mass market with Shine 100 cc at Rs 64,900
The Indian subsidiary of Japan’s largest two-wheeler maker – Honda Motorcycle & Scooter India has finally entered the highly competitive 100 cc market with the Shine 100 on Wednesday, its biggest bet yet to attempt at grabbing leadership in the country.
Priced at Rs 64900 ex-showroom Mumbai, the company says Shine 100 is its most affordable and fuel-efficient mass motorcycle by Honda yet, having entered India almost 23 years back. The bookings open on Wednesday, the production starts from April and deliveries will begin in May.
The launch of Shine 100 will help Honda cater to 28% of the overall two-wheeler market – where it had no presence so far. A model that may help Honda inch closer to Hero MotoCorp the number one – two-wheeler maker in the country.
The Honda Shine 100 goes up against some stiff competition in the category, most of which comes from its chief rival, Hero MotoCorp. There are four products that Hero retails in this segment, HF 100, HF Deluxe, Splendor+ and Splendor+ XTEC, all of which are priced between Rs 54,962 and Rs 75,840. Bajaj has a single entrant in this space, in the form of the Platina 100, priced at Rs 67,475. With an introductory price of Rs 64,900, the Honda Shine 100 sits right around the middle of the pack in the 100cc space in India.
While the company is non-committal on guiding for volumes for the model, according to people in the know, Honda Motorcycle & Scooter India plans to produce about 25000 units per month of the new Shine 100 cc.
The model will cater to a large rural market – which contributes to about 65% of the total two wheeler sales in the country.
Shine 100 is developed with as many as 12 patent applications for the enhancement of reliability, claimed the company.

The 100cc mass commuter motorcycle will support the company’s 125cc motorcycle segment, where it is an undisputed leader. The 100-110 cc segment accounts for 33% of the overall motorcycle market with entry 100 cc making up for 80% of the entry segment.
Internally codenamed MC 100, it has been developed grounds up that meets the upcoming OBD norms and is compliant to e20 fuel.
All-new 100cc Engine
The Shine 100 is an OBD2 compliant PGM-FI engine, boosted by Enhanced Smart Power (eSP) which optimizes energy output by maximizing efficient combustion and minimizing friction with a smooth eco-friendly engine, claims Honda.
This new 100cc engine is lightweight and efficient with the finest innovation producing optimum performance, enhanced maneuverability, and will deliver class leading mileage delivering highest value to customers. External fuel pump fitted outside the fuel tank reduces the maintenance time as it is easily accessible, says the company.
Programmed Fuel Injection (PGM-FI): The system uses onboard sensors to constantly inject optimum fuel and air mixture which aids consistent power output, high fuel efficiency & less emissions.
Friction Reduction: The piston cooling jet reduces friction & maintains optimum engine temperature. The offset cylinder and use of rocker roller arm further reduce the frictional loss which not only helps in smooth and better power output, but also improves fuel efficiency.
Comfort and Convenience
The long and comfortable seat (677mm) provides ample space for the rider and the pillion riding to ride long distances with comfort. The optimum seat height (786mm) allows easy ground touch for average height Indian riders, claims Honda.
The specially developed suspension unit with long stroke manages any kind of road conditions with ease. Its ability to absorb the vibrations on rough surfaces gives extra stability and confidence to the rider and pillion, the statement from the company added.
The bike also comes with a side stand with engine inhibitor that prevents engine start while the side stand is engaged enabling a convenient and carefree ride.
The Combi-Brake System (CBS) with Equalizer ensures a safer ride.
Maximum Utility
Honda Motorcycle says the long Wheelbase (1245 mm) and high ground clearance (168mm) make it stable at higher speeds and bad road conditions inspiring rider confidence. Lightweight durable steel frame contributes to overall lower vehicle weight. The small turning radius of 1.9 meters – supports vehicle handling on narrow roads
To ensure peace of mind, HMSI is also offering a 6-year warranty package (3 years standard + 3 years optional extended warranty) on Shine 100.
Shine 100 will be available in 5 color options (Black with Red Stripes, Black with Blue Stripes, Black with Green Stripes, Black with Gold Stripes and Black with Grey Stripes).
