German Handelsblatt: Car manufacturer: VW lays foundation stone for battery factory in Spain – The next plant in Europe is likely to be a long time coming006547

The Volkswagen Group begins construction of its first battery cell plant in Spain in Sagunto near Valencia. VW Technical Director Thomas Schmall said at the laying of the foundation stone with Spain’s King Felipe VI. and Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez: “Today is a historic day for the transformation of the European auto industry.” The laying of the foundation stone stands “for a new beginning”.
Volkswagen intends to open its first battery cell plant in Salzgitter in 2025. The site in Spain is scheduled to start operations in 2026 with more than 3,000 direct employees.
Initially, an annual production of battery cells with a total capacity of 40 gigawatt hours (GWh) is planned – enough for half a million electric cars per year, said Schmall. In the last stage of expansion, the production capacity is to increase to 60 GWh. More than three billion euros are planned for the construction of the plant. The production is to be carried out with green electricity, including from a neighboring solar park.
