The car manufacturer Opel secures its plant in Eisenach with the production of the successor model of the SUV Grandland. “We will also be building the electric successor to the Grandland in Eisenach from the second half of 2024. This investment gives the plant clear prospects for the future,” said Opel CEO Florian Huettl of the German Press Agency in Frankfurt. The Opel parent company Stellantis is investing 130 million euros in the Eisenach plant
The new Grandland is to be built at the Stellantis subsidiary in Thuringia in an electric version and as a plug-in hybrid. “We consider hybrid to be an excellent transitional technology, for which there is also great demand in Europe and worldwide,” said Huettl. “For us, however, hybrid is clearly a transitional technology.” Opel has set itself the goal of offering only fully electric cars in Europe from 2028 onwards.
According to Opel, 1,200 employees are currently producing the SUV Grandland as a plug-in hybrid and with classic combustion engines at the Eisenach plant. With the new model, Opel is planning for seven to eight years.
According to Huettl, the carmaker wants to keep the number of employees in Eisenach. “The plant thus confirms its important role in Stellantis’ global production network and its outstanding role for Opel,” said the manager. “Of course, every plant has to keep working on competitiveness and quality and thus prove that it is possible to be productive there accordingly.”
