Hamburg will soon introduce autonomous shuttles to achieve the “Hamburg-Takt”, which aims for everyone in Hamburg to be able to reach a public transport service within five minutes.

Hamburg has already had some autonomous driving projects, such as HEAT or automated Trucks on the route to the port and example Shuttles in Bergedorf. Now the city is planning Hamburgto supplement the already existing on-demand shuttles “hvv hop” with autonomous cars to complement the classic public transport network and improve passenger comfort.

The project “Automation of the Hamburg on-demand offer with integration into public transport” (ahoi) is supported by the Federal Ministry of Transport with 18 million euros and a total of 37 million euros are earmarked for this. By the end of 2025, 20 automated and 28 manually operated vehicles will be in service. The exact details of the autonomous vehicles will be determined as part of the project.

The ahoi project is part of the declaration of intent on the “mobility model region” that the federal government and the city of Hamburg presented in December 2022. The goal is to introduce up to 10,000 autonomous vehicles in Hamburg by 2030 and to create a new digital on-demand transport service that can also be adapted for rural areas. Other projects are Automation of the Hamburg S-Bahn and hosting the UITP World Congress in Hamburg in 2025 and 2027.
