Tata Nexons past 500,000 production milestone in 67 months

Tata Motors and the half-a-million mark are getting familiar these days. From achieving sales of over 500,000-units for the first time in a calendar year in 2022 and repeating the feat in a fiscal in FY2023, the carmaker has announced its latest 500,000 milestone – production of the Nexon compact SUV.

The 500,000th Nexon rolled out from Tata Motors’ Ranjangaon plant on April 11, 2023, a little less than 67 months after the company launched the game-changing model on September 21, 2017. Given the accelerating pace of consumer demand for India’s best-selling utility vehicle as well as electric vehicle, it is not surprising that the timeline for successive production milestones keep getting shorter (see Nexon production timeline below).

The latest 100,000-unit production milestone, which takes the Nexon’s production run to 500,000 units and counting, has come up in a scant six-and-a-half months, a fortnight lesser than the 300,000 to 400,000-unit run and 45 days less than what the 300,000th Nexon rollout took. The 300,000th Nexon was produced on February 28, 2022, eight months after the 200,000th unit had been produced, which was 46 months since the compact SUV was launched.

Proof of the surging demand for the Tata Nexon is the fact that the compact SUV became India’s best-selling utility vehicle in FY2022 selling 124,130 units and has maintained that No. 1 status in FY2023 with sales of 172,138 units. This also means that Tata Motors has adroitly managed the supply-demand scenario for the Nexon which is sold with multiple powertrains – petrol, diesel and electric.

Sold in as many as 69 variants – 47 petrol, 10 diesel and 12 electric, with automatic and manual transmission options, the Tata Nexon’s sales continue to accelerate at a rapid pace.

The high-on-style, big-on-content Nexon has recently received a facelift – the interiors are better, space and comfort levels remain good and the SUV impresses with its ride and handling. While the 1.5-litre diesel engine is better than the 1.2-litre turbo-petrol unit, the Nexon EV has carved a niche of its own and is India’s best-selling EV.

With demand for compact SUVs showing no signs of slowing down, FY2024 should see the Nexon further making inroads into India’s ultra-competitive UV market. What has also helped Tata Motors with its fast-paced production is its better supply chain management throughout the last fiscal, essentially being able to deliver cars faster and keep the strong con-Nexon with the SUV customer.
