2023 Ford Maverick Tremor: My 60-second takeaway on Ford’s next hit

The 2023 Ford Maverick’s Tremor equipment package adds welcome off-road ability and winning styling touches to one of America’s popular small pickups.

The Maverick’s famously low price — base models start at $22,195 — is a casualty of those additions, but plenty of buyers will ante up for the Tremor, and be delighted with the result.

The Tremor package — details below — costs $2,995, and you can’t get it without ticking another box on the order form for all-wheel drive, eight-speed automatic transmission and 250-horsepower turbocharged 2.0L engine. Another $2,200. Cha-ching!

New off-road hardware

In addition to AWD, the Tremor’s extra inch of ground clearance and substantial upgrades to running gear including a locking rear differential make it a legitimate off-roader, despite the lack of hard-core machinery like a low range for extreme rock climbing.

The Lariat Tremor I drove was the top model — $37,850 before destination charges — so it also had niceties like eight-speaker B&O audio, heated front seats and steering wheel. Safety and driver assistance features included adaptive cruise control, blind spot and cross traffic alerts.

The steering required more small corrections at highway speeds than I remember from other Mavericks, possibly a result of the all-terrain tires and new springs and shocks. Ride and handling are more than acceptable, however.

The Maverick Lariat Tremor is comfortable and easy to use in everyday driving, with all the passenger and hauling capacity many drivers will ever need.
