Emerging strategies to improve EV charger uptimes (New Report)

Uptime is a critical factor in the success of public fast charging networks. It measures the functional availability of chargers, and is an indicator of the reliability of the charging infrastructure. A high level of uptime is essential for EV drivers, as it ensures that they have access to charging when they need it.

In a 2022 Forbes Wheels survey, 43% of the 500 US EV driver respondents reported they had encountered broken public charging stations. The CEO of ChargerHelp! Kameale Terry, a national EV charger maintenance provider, estimates that up to 32% of public U.S. EV chargers are out of operation at any given time, with these outages going largely undetected by Charge Point Operators (CPOs) until a technician is physically present.

The growth of the EV market is driving an increase in the demand for public fast charging infrastructure. However, the uptime reliability of these charging stations remains a problem for EV drivers and CPOs. In this report, we will explore the challenges facing CPOs as well as tactics to enhance DC fast charger site uptime, including:

  • The Important Role Uptime Plays in Receiving Grants and Funding
  • The Common Causes of EV Charger Uptime Issues
  • The Cost and Time Implications of Maintenance Truck Rolls
  • The Impact of Charger Downtime on Customer Loyalty
  • Strategies for Maintaining EV Charger Uptime
