Apple has reportedly reduced the number of riders for its testing program in California.
The company is based in Cupertino, California Apple had 145 travelers for its program at the end of April. That’s 66 fewer than in March, according to US media, citing data from the DMV.
In 2017, Apple CEO Tim Cook reaffirmed interest in autonomous vehicles, calling it “the mother project of all AI projects.” Before that, Cook said that artificial intelligence is “an important focus” of the company.
Officially, Apple has never confirmed the construction of an autonomous vehicle, but under ProjectTitan it worked initially. However, it is questionable whether Apple will ever be able to catch up with the successes of Google’s sister Waymo. But maybe you’ll see each other in the competition Tesla.
Another consideration, of course, is whether Apple is slowly phasing out the project? Given the wave of layoffs in Silicon Valley, the step may just be a form of detoxification. There have been major layoffs before, but Apple has always stayed on the ball with autonomous driving. Although no official progress has been made to date.
