The automotive group has set itself the goal of 15 percent more sales and sales for 2023 – that’s about a million more cars than last year. Despite a strong first quarter of the year, the company has so far lagged behind its goals. The current production figures are still below target, explains Daniel Röska, automotive analyst at Bernstein. The group around CEO Oliver Blume is confronted with a range of challenges – from the shaky VW business in China to the price war with US competitor Tesla.
Because VW wants to grow again quickly after the crisis years, the carmaker had to fill up its inventory in 2022. Second, many cars never found their way to customers because of supply chain issues — which had a negative impact on cash flow. The latter should therefore move more into the key figure focus in the future, explained Blume.
