Tui expects a strong travel summer – almost at the pre-crisis level
The travel group achieved a better result in the past quarter and is registering high bookings for the summer. From January to March, sales rose by 48 percent to 3.15 billion euros compared to the same period last year, which was still dampened by the corona pandemic, as the company announced on Wednesday. The cruise business improved the most, with revenue more than tripling to EUR 142 million. The usual seasonal operating loss was EUR 242 million, almost EUR 90 million lower than a year ago. With higher average prices, travel bookings for the summer have already reached 96 percent of the level of summer 2019, the year before the outbreak of the corona pandemic.
“It will be a strong summer and a good 2023 financial year with a significantly higher positive result,” explained Tui boss Sebastian Ebel. In the past six weeks, bookings have been higher than for the same period in 2019. After the state Corona financial aid has been repaid, the world’s largest travel group wants to “return to old strength and profitable growth”.
