Kochi: Motor vehicles department (MVD) on Friday raided electric vehicle showrooms across state given complaints that EVs with less battery power are sold to customers by increasing the power illegally.

The complaints are that EVs with 250 watts are sold to customers by increasing power to 1,000 watts illegally. The driver does not require a licence for driving electric scooters with 250 watts. It also need not to register with MVD.

“We have found some EVs with increased battery power than the mandatory limit. It is the fault of the vehicle manufacturer, and we have written to the companies regarding the unauthorised reinforcing of battery power,” said an MVD official.

MVD received complaints from the public, and CCTVs installed at various places also caught EVs of 250 watts plying at a speed of 48km/hr instead of 25km/hr.
