The substance that Volkswagen is supposed to bring forward in the battery issue looks like a mixture of chia seeds and gunpowder. Dressed in white protective clothing, Sebastian Reuber is standing in a VW development center near Wolfsburg and is crushing the granulate in front of him with a spatula. The lumps become a dull grey, stable layer. “This is the crucial step,” he says. It is what no other automaker has been able to do so far.
Reuber is head of a process innovation at Volkswagen that has been operating in secret until now: dry coating. If you want to visit the 42-year-old at work, you have to go through a revolving gate with a sign in front of it that reads: “Visitors, please register at reception.” It is essential that this is underlined.
