The Pune Regional Transport Office (RTO) has asked all officials to constantly change their Vahan portal passwords and hide the login ID following the incident in which fitness certificates were issued to 9 commercial vehicles from the ID of an official without any checks.
These nine vehicles are being searched so that officials can know the exact modus operandi. “While the police are investigating the matter, we too are looking into it. The fitness certificates issued to these 9 vehicles were done in a single day and this is the first such case ,” an RTO official said.
Pune RTO Ajit Shinde said there was no computer hacking prima facae. “The person managed to find the login ID and password of the female RTO officer. Then the person logged into the system using a different computer and issued these certificates,” Shinde told TOI. RTO inspector Renuka Rathod lodged a complaint with the Bund Garden police station pertaining to the same on Friday.
“We presently don’t know whether there are more instances like this, but the chances are unlikely. However, all officials who can log into Vahan and those working in the field have been asked to change their passwords frequently. They have also been asked to take precautions whenever they are logging in. They should ensure to hide their passwords from prying eyes and keep them complex. The Vahan login changes everyday but passwords have to be changed manually by the users,” Rathod pointed out.
