On the contentious issue of putting a halt to the registration of non-EV two-wheelers, and other issues related to the Chandigarh EV policy, the UT administration will take a call on June 28.
UT adviser Dharam Pal will hold a review meeting of the policy. “On June 28, the 10th meeting of the governing body of the Chandigarh Renewable Energy and Society & Technology Promotion (CREST) will be held. The issues related with the EV policy will also be discussed in the meeting,” sources said.
The issue of capping targets regarding the registration of non-EV two-wheelers have faced increasing resistance from the automobile agencies. Recently, Chandigarh mayor Anup Gupta had also vociferously opposed the administration’s move to stop the registration of the non-EV two-wheelers.
Gupta, addressing a conference of the joint action committee of various residents, industry and traders association, had warned, “If the administration can’t give a level playing field to the city residents, then I will go along the residents to stop the entry of non-EVs registered in other states. We will not allow the EV policy to be implemented in the city if other states’ non-EV vehicle entry is also not stopped.”
Notably, on June 9, the administration had announced its intention to stop the registration of the EV vehicles from July.
Under the policy, in order to limit and discourage non-electric vehicles in first year, 10% reduction in four-wheelers and 35% in two-wheelers compared to preceding year has been aimed by way of capping their registration in the city. Now, for the consecutive year, reduction of 20% in four-wheelers and 70% in two-wheelers has been capped for the current financial year i.e. 2023-2024.
A UT spokesperson had declared, “After achieving the registration targets of non-electric two wheelers, the registration (i.e. permanent and temporary both) will not be allowed within Chandigarh as the registration quota for the subsequent year in the policy is NIL for non-electric two wheelers. The target of non-electric two wheelers is likely to be achieved by first week of July and that of four-wheelers by December-end.”
