The Noida Authority has prepared a plan to reduce the risk of accidents at 15 high-risk spots and allocated a budget of INR 5.4 crore for the project. Officials said the Noida Authority would soon issue tenders to hire contractors for work suggested by a private consultant at each of these 15 spots.
Earlier, the traffic police, after an analysis of road accidents between 2020 and 2022, identified and shared a list of 15 critical intersections with the Noida Authority, which subsequently engaged a private consultant to conduct a detailed survey of each spot, shedding light on specific issues and suggesting changes.
The 15 spots include intersections at Sector 21-25, Rajnigandha, Mahamaya, Sector 37, GIP Sector 18, Hajipur, Sector 93, Sector 110, Mamura, ABCD Chowk, Chilla Border, DND Border, Phool Mandi, Nagla Bus Stop, and Sector 63 Block A.
The survey by the consultant revealed specific issues plaguing these intersections like geometric design problems, inadequate access control, lack of pedestrian crossings and insufficient signage, among others.
For instance, unchanneled traffic merges at the Chilla border intersection between Delhi and Noida, which leads to accidents.
Similarly, unchanneled traffic diverges at the DND border intersection, leading to accidents. The risk is higher due to a lack of warning and indication signs.
The Rajnigandha Chowk near Sector 16 metro station faces issues due to geometric design and inadequate access control. Insufficient traffic signage further compounds the problem.
At Mahamaya Chowk along the Noida Expressway, unchanneled traffic merges, which, along with limited weaving space and inadequate traffic signage, poses a challenge.
The Sector 37 intersection near the Botanical Garden metro station lacks pedestrian crossing and traffic calming measures, resulting in conflicts between pedestrians and vehicles.
The Sector 18 intersection, adjacent to a commercial hub, also suffers from insufficient pedestrian infrastructure and traffic calming measures, leading to conflicts between pedestrians and vehicles, particularly in heavy traffic conditions.
Another critical intersection, the ABCD Chowk near Shatabdi Rail Vihar in Sector 62, faces issues with its geometric design and an unsystematic water pipe placement, creating hazardous conditions.
The consultant’s report identified these intersections as black spots-where frequent vehicular conflicts occur, leading to accidents.
The consultant also proposed three packages, each focusing on rectifying five dark spots. The three packages include design improvements, enhanced access control, and installing appropriate traffic signage at the respective intersections.
Officials said that the Authority would soon hire contractors to implement the suggestions.
