New Delhi: In a significant breakthrough NTPC is going to start the opertions of India’s first green hydrogen fuelling station in Ladakh within 2-3 months and ahead of scheduled commissioning in December.
State-run power giant is planning to commission its green hydrogen fuelling station project in Leh by August-September this year, which is ahead of schedule, Mohit Bhargava, CEO, NTPC Green Energy told ETEnergyWorld.
“The project is slated to be completed by November-December 2023. We are trying to get it done before schedule,” he said.
The project will produce 80 Kg per day of 99.97 %pure hydrogen that will be compressed, stored and dispensed. NTPC plans to ply five hydrogen fuel cell buses in the region.
The buses will be provided by Ashok Leyland, said Bhargava.
Being set up at Leh in the Union Territory of Ladakh, the project will be India’s first green hydrogen fuelling station. The power generator had awarded the contract for the project to Amara Raja Power Systems, part of the USD 1.3 billion Amara Raja Group, in June 2022.
Under the project, green hydrogen will be produced by splitting water into hydrogen and oxygen using electrolysis powered by renewable energy. The project is being set up at a height of 3,600 metres above sea level with a temperature variation of minus 14 degrees to plus 20 degrees Celsius.
NTPC’s wholly-owned subsidiary NTPC Renewable Energy Ltd had floated the tender for the project in July last year. NTPC REL is also setting up a 1.25 Mw solar power plant to make the hydrogen fuelling station completely green.
