Malaysia‘s Prime Minister, Anwar Ibrahim, announced on Friday that he is scheduled to meet with Elon Musk, the CEO of Tesla and owner of Twitter, to discuss the billionaire’s potential investment in Malaysia. During a speech at an event with civil servants, Anwar revealed that Musk had expressed his interest in increasing his investments in the Southeast Asian nation. The meeting is set to take place next week, although no specific details were provided.
This announcement comes after Malaysia’s Trade Ministry granted approval to Tesla Inc. in March to import battery-run electric vehicles (EVs) into the country. As part of this approval, Tesla is expected to establish an office, showrooms, and service centers in Malaysia. Furthermore, the company aims to develop a network of charging stations to support its EVs. However, no timeline for these developments has been specified. At the time of reporting, Tesla had not responded to requests for comment regarding the meeting with Anwar.
In addition to discussing Tesla’s potential investments, Anwar also shared that he recently met with Saudi Aramco during a conference in late June. During their meeting, the Saudi state oil company expressed its commitment to increasing investments in the state of Johor. It is worth noting that Malaysia’s national oil and gas company, Petronas, and Saudi Aramco jointly own a refinery-petrochemical complex in Pengerang, Johor.
The meetings with Elon Musk and Saudi Aramco signify Malaysia’s ongoing efforts to attract foreign investment and strengthen its position in the renewable energy and petrochemical sectors.
