Singapore-based blackx music fund has acquired the rights to manage the intellectual property (IP) of Tanya Chua’s lifetime music and compositions, according to an announcement.
Tanya Chua is one of Mandopop’s most awarded songwriters and music producers, having secured multiple wins at Taiwan’s 2022 Golden Melody Awards (GMA) for “Album Of The Year” and “Best Mandarin Album” for her “DEPART” album. She is also the only artist to be awarded Best Female Singer (Mandarin) four times at the GMA, which is recognised as Asia’s equivalent to the Grammy’s in the Mandopop industry.
blackx fund will manage all of Tanya Chua’s musical assets, past compositions and collaborations, as well as future songs in a “multi-year” agreement as part of this deal. This covers all of Chua’s top hits such as Letting Go and her collaborations with top artists including Carla Bruni, Jolin Tsai, Jam Hsiao, A-Mei, Eason Chan, Na Ying and others.
The deal will also see blackx focus on maximising Chua’s existing music IP to create and curate new works across a wider variety of audio-visual formats. The fund’s presence in Singapore, Greater China and Japan will also allow the firm to distribute and promote the IPs through emerging platforms and explore vertical segments in emerging areas like gaming and fitness.
“Making great music that not only entertains but resonates with audiences has always been my focus. This partnership with blackx will raise the bar on connecting with my fans through a variety of content formats, distribution platforms and artistic collaborations. Ultimately, I hope that my works can engage and inspire more emerging songwriters while accompanying listeners on their personal journeys throughout the years,” said Tanya Chua in the statement.
“Tanya is a landmark Asian artist and her works underpin the foundation for blackx to build upon. We are stoked to partner with one of Asia’s generational talents who embodies timelessness, and to fulfil her passion and enable endless possibilities for her award-winning body of work, in turn creating new experiences for her fans not only in Asia but globally,” said Tan Chee Meng, CEO of blackx.
This is blackx fund’s second acquisition since its launch last year. The Singapore-based investor cut its first deal last month by acquiring Taiwanese songwriter Frances Wang’s catalogue of over 230 songs. The deal covers over 30 years of her music performed by well-known Asian singers such as Faye Wong, A-Mei and Jeff Zhang Xin Zhe.
Blackx fund is a $100 million music fund managed by ex-Spotify and Warner Music Group veterans. It is one of the region’s earliest music funds dedicated to the North Asian and Southeast Asian market.
