The Noida International Airport Authority (NIAL) plans to write to the UP civil aviation department to expand the width of the peripheral road from the Yamuna Expressway service road to the multimodal cargo hub at the upcoming Noida International Airport from the initially-proposed 45m to 75m.
Officials said the step is in anticipation of future cargo movement requirements and the proposed aviation hub in the region. The techno-economic feasibility report of the airport talks about a 45-m-wide peripheral road, which, officials said, would not adequately cater to the needs of the envisioned aviation industry and the multimodal cargo hub.
So far, the civil aviation department has not granted consent for building a 75-m-wide road on the acquired land of the airport but has directed NIAL officials to explore other peripheral road options. The department has argued that a 75-m-wide parallel road, catering to YEIDA sectors 30, 31, 8, and 7, already runs alongside the proposed 45-m-wide road, suggesting that expansion is unnecessary.
However, NIAL officials have expressed concerns, stating that the YEIDA road primarily serves its sectors, and increased pressure from airport cargo vehicles on this road could create problems in the future. So, it has prepared a proposal for expanding the peripheral road.
NIAL CEO Arun Vir Singh said the construction of the 75m peripheral road is required to accommodate the growing number of cargo vehicles and the aviation industry, which would come up in the region. He added that acquiring 1,365 hectares in the second phase would facilitate road construction without any hindrance. An MRO (Maintenance, Repair, and Overhaul) facility and aviation-related industries will come up on the acquired land.
“In light of these developments, we will send a letter to the civil aviation department, providing details of all available options and justifications for the proposed expansion,” Singh added.
Commercial flight services will likely start at the Noida International Airport by the end of 2024.
