Trichy corporation of Tamil Nadu has pointed fingers at the state highways department for not beginning relaying work on roads near the Chathiram bus stand, which were dug up for the underground drainage (UGD) project.
“We have transferred the money to the highways department to repair the damaged roads around the bus stand. But the highways department is unwilling to relay them. They want us to complete the pending UGD work in the entire area to launch road repair works,” a corporation official said.
Corporation said that the pending work around the bus stand would be completed in a couple of weeks and added that they will reiterate to the highways department to repair the roads simultaneously.
With most of the arterial roads dug up for the underground drainage (UGD) project in Trichy city either restored or in the process of relaying, roads connecting the Chathiram bus stand continue to give a bumpy ride to commuters. Road safety activists condemned the delay in launching the restoration work by the state highways department and corporation.
“Two-wheeler riders are losing control of their vehicles while riding over the uneven surface. Since the roads are frequented by city buses, restoration work should commence soon to avoid fatal accidents,” P Aiyarappan, an activist said.
