In an attempt to fill the gaps with regard to first and last-mile connectivity from metro stations in the city, an auto union, in collaboration with the Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL), is coming up with an application named ‘Metro Mitra.’ This application will allow commuters to purchase metro tickets as well as auto rides for first and last-mile connectivity at once.
The initiative has been taken up by the Auto Rickshaw Drivers Union (ARDU), which was also involved in building Namma Yatri. The application allows metro passengers to book an auto ride along with the purchase of a metro ticket. This can be done either through the BMRCL’s application or Metro’s WhatsApp chatbot feature. The ONDC (Open Network for Digital Commerce) model is being used to run the application, which is set to go for trials beginning Monday.
The initiative also aims to instill professionalism back into the auto community by following the government meter fare model. However, there will be an additional flat fare charge of INR 10 for pick-up and technology charges. Once the auto ride is booked, the commuter will receive a one-time password (OTP) along with other ride details. The designated auto driver will pick up the commuter from Metro Mitra zones created for auto drivers in the vicinity of metro stations.
Passengers are eager for its implementation as many complain about not being able to find ways to fulfill last and first-mile connectivity. “I have to get off at the metro station in JP Nagar and take an auto to reach my residence in BTM layout. I often try to book them through applications like Namma Yatri, Ola, or Uber, but if the new application is rolled out, it will be much more convenient.
It will leave no room for doubt as many times I have not been able to find an auto for last-mile connectivity through aggregators and have had to pay extra,” said Ashish, a frequent commuter. Another commuter said that it will also help stop fleecing by auto drivers – a massive issue faced by passengers in the city.
