Continental has found a potential buyer for its brake plant in Gifhorn, Lower Saxony. The Dax group from Hanover announced on Wednesday that negotiations with the building technology manufacturer Stiebel Eltron about the use of the location had begun. The family company from Holzminden wants to build modules for heat pumps there. Most recently, around 900 people were employed at the supplier plant, around 100 of whom are temporary workers. The aim is to give as many as possible employment prospects at Stiebel Eltron, said a spokeswoman.
IG Metall welcomed the talks. This could secure a future for a significant proportion of employees. Heat pumps are in great demand when switching to climate-friendly heating systems, and manufacturers can hardly keep up with production.
Conti announced in early July that it would close the factory by the end of 2027. The supplier group cited the sharp rise in cost pressure in the automotive industry as the reason. The cessation of business activities should start next year.
