New Delhi: Soon all expressways and national highways will have bigger and more visible signages at frequent intervals to guide commuters and ensure they don’t miss them while driving on these high-speed corridors. The road transport ministry has notified the guidelines on signages and directed highway-owning agencies for their implementation.
This is for the first time that the ministry has directed highway-owning agencies to install gantries mentioning lane speeds on expressways and NHs to inform commuters on the type of vehicle meant to ply on them. For example, the gantry on a three-lane carriageway of an expressway will mention 100 kmph for the extreme left lane, meant for trucks and other heavy vehicles, while for the remaining two lanes the speed sign will be 120 kmph. Such speed signages will be installed at every 20-km interval.
Similarly, maximum-speed signages for each category of vehicle will be installed at every 5-km interval, alternately on the shoulders and the medians.
As per the guidelines, the road-owning agencies will have to put sign boards on the shoulder to inform heavy vehicles to keep left and these signages need to be put after every 5 km.
The ministry has specified the design and size of the signages and has directed the agencies to ensure uniformity of these signages. “In the first stage, it should be implemented on all new upcoming highways, expressways and greenfield corridors along with highways having PCUs of more than 20,000 and the cost implication on per km basis should be worked out simultaneously,” it said.
