First batch of Triumph Speed 400s rolls out of Bajaj Auto plant

Three weeks after the Bajaj Auto-Triumph Motorcycles combine launched the Triumph Speed 400 at Rs 223,000 for the first 10,000 units, the Pune-based Bajaj Auto has rolled out the first batch of the locally manufactured motorcycle from its Chakan plant. 

The Triumph Speed 400 and its sibling Scrambler 400 are the first products to come from Triumph’s partnership with Bajaj Auto and will be built by the Pune-based motorcycle major in India. 

Unveiled in London on June 27, both the Triumph Speed 400 and Scrambler 400 X have received an unprecedented market response. Online bookings have been opened and there is a strong booking pipeline even before the bikes reach dealerships in India. By July 8, Triumph had already received over 10,000 bookings and alliance partner Bajaj Auto confirmed plans to ramp up manufacturing to meet the surging demand for the midsize motorcycle. 

The Speed 400 is priced at Rs 233,000 (ex-showroom Delhi). At this price, the Triumph Speed 400 comfortably undercuts its rivals like the KTM 390 Duke (Rs 297,000), BMW G 310 R (Rs 285,000), Royal Enfield Interceptor 650 (Rs 303,000 – Rs 331,000). 

Powering the new entry-level Triumph is a liquid-cooled, 398cc, single-cylinder engine which develops 40hp at 8000rpm and 37.5 Nm at 6500rpm. This brand-new engine has been christened the TR-series and is mated to a six-speed gearbox. Output figures are in the ballpark of the KTM 390s (also made in India by Bajaj), but the Speed 400 (as does the Triumph Scrambler 400 X) achieve their peak figures earlier in the rev band. 

The Triumph Speed 400, which enters the booming Indian midsize motorcycle market, will be available at Triumph India dealerships by the end of July 2023 for customer deliveries, according to Bajaj Auto.  

According to a Bajaj Auto statement, Triumph dealerships will contact the first lot of customers to complete the remaining formalities and take delivery of their Speed 400s. Display and test ride bikes will be available at all Triumph showrooms for customers to experience the bikes first hand. According to Bajaj Auto, the existing network witll be expanded to over 100 showrooms, in a phased manner, across 80 cities by end-March 2024.
