The city corporation has mooted a proposal to procure around 800 e-carts (small electric vehicles to collect garbage from households) and 77 tipper autorickshaws. The local body will launch operations of 120 e-carts which are procured by the corporation in the first phase of the project to collect waste from primary collection centres on Thursday.
In the next phase, the local body will procure 237 e-carts and 40 tipper autorickshaws. “Once the vehicles are procured, it will help streamline waste collection in the city. E-carts will be used to collect waste from primary collection centres. Then, the waste collected by a few e-carts will be shifted to a tipper autorickshaw. Tipper autorickshaw will unload the waste into the refuse compactor truck,” said corporation health standing committee chairman T K Asharaf. “This will ensure that waste would not remain dumped on the streets,” he said.
The first set of 120 e-carts will be given to the corporation’s workers who collect waste. “They will collect waste lying on the streets using the e-carts. As per the original plan, the e-carts should have been given to Haritha Karma Sena (HKS) members who collect waste from households. Now, the corporation authorities say that the e-carts to be procured in the next phases will be given to HKS members,” opposition leader Antony Kureethra said.
