The city police have recommended the suspension of 170 driving licences (DLs) for violations of IPC and Motor Vehicles Act sections by motorists.
From July 27 to August 6, the police have recommended the suspension of licenses, for various violations. Total 95 cases were registered for riding without a helmet, which accounted for the highest number. The other violations include accident cases-24, overspeed/rash and negligent cases- 12, goods vehicle carrying passengers-11, using a mobile phone while driving-5, red signal jumping-7, triple riding-3 and without seat belt cases-13.
City police commissioner Kuldeep Kumar R Jain said in an attempt to prevent accidents, in the past 11 days, 89 cases have been booked for carrying passengers in vehicles beyond the permitted capacity and six cases have been booked for violating the one-way traffic rule while driving. Meanwhile, taking into account the concerns voiced during the monthly phone-in programme and the Sanchara Sampark divas, the police have booked 371 cases and utilised wheel clamps for improper parking. Furthermore, 31 cases have been recorded for the use of shrill horns, and 23 cases have been filed for the use of black film or tinted glasses on vehicles.
It may be recalled that from July 13 to 26, the police recommended the suspension of 222 DLs. RTO (in charge) Ravishankar P said: “The decision to suspend DLs will be made after issuing a notice to the offenders and hearing their case. The suspension period is determined based on the severity of the offence.” “Last year, 225 DLs were suspended and this year, so far, 78 DLs have been suspended temporarily,” said ARTO Vishwanath Naik.
