Ironically, during the factory holidays, activists of the last generation blocked the access roads to the BMW plant in Regensburg on Tuesday. The action had no effect on production, as the plant was on vacation this week and production was idle, a company spokesman said. According to the police, 40 activists took part in the actions on several streets early in the morning around 5 a.m. They were taken into custody. The police are investigating for coercion.
As early as Monday, 55 climate activists from the last generation had blocked streets in Regensburg. In order to prevent further crimes, seven of them had to spend the night in detention by court order.
The last generation had threatened to make “Munich a protest stronghold” for weeks before and during the IAA car and traffic fair. The actions in Regensburg are a foretaste of what Munich expects from next Thursday (August 24), the group said.
The trade fair organizers invited the last generation to take part in the IAA with their own stand and put their arguments up for discussion. It is still unclear whether the group will accept the offer.
The Munich police announced that they would increase their presence in the city from Thursday. The officers would “intervene consistently” in the event of blockades, damage to property and other criminal offenses, but at the same time “with a sense of proportion in each individual case, also with regard to the importance of freedom of assembly,” said the police headquarters on Tuesday. The officials advised motorists to avoid the city center, especially on Thursday, and to switch to local public transport.
Last-generation activists have been making headlines for the past year by blockading roads, highways and airports, pasting paintings in museums, disrupting theater performances and paint attacks. According to Federal Interior Minister Nancy Faeser (SPD) in June, the group already had 580 criminal offenses, mostly coercion and property damage.
The last generation accuses the federal government of violating the constitution. “It is still fueling the climate crisis and has brought us to the brink of an abyss.” Therefore, a social council must be convened to end the use of fossil raw materials in Germany by 2030. The participants of this council are to be drawn by lot.
