TVS Motor Company unveiled its latest electric two-wheeler – TVS X – aimed at the Gen-Z buyers, at a mega global event held in Dubai on August 23. The company launched the product at a price of Rs 2.5 lakh, ex-showroom, without any subsidies into consideration.
The company is targeting the X – a born-electric product that breaks the boundaries of conventional scooter design, at the Gen-Z buyers, who in India, have stated opening up to the idea of making aspirational purchases and value experiences.
The Chennai-headquartered two-wheeler manufacturer has pinned focus on the design, performance, and connectivity aspects of its latest electric offering which will go to market in November 2023. The X will be first rolled out in Bengaluru and then expanded to at least 15 cities by the end of FY24.
The all-new TVS X is based on TVS’ form-follows-function design approach while ensuring desirability as well as the disruptive nature of the product attributes. “The X is a mystery and is not restricted to any boundaries of either the conventional scooter or motorcycle design in the market,” said a company official while showcasing the product.
Breaking the norm with design and tech
The TVS X looks unconventional in its styling with no footboard at the front, or bulky side panels, which particularly mark the departure from traditional scooter styling.
The front frame of the e-scooter is made up of hybrid aluminium and high-precision casting, while the monocast rear subframe is made up of aluminium to protect the battery pack as well. The motor and controller are placed right behind the battery pack to arrive at a low-set, and centralised centre of gravity to achieve a 50:50 weight balance to offer an engaging riding experience.
The TVS X features a twin-shock-absorber setup at the front, while it gets an offset rear monoshock to offer better riding dynamics. The scooter comes shod with 12-inch, silica-compound-based tyres that offer low rolling resistance.
The X features an all-LED lighting setup, with the 26 LEDs in its headlight being independently customisable. The X welcomes the rider with a signature theme play of its lights and sounds.
The e-scooter also features a 10.2-inch TFT fully-digital instrument cluster which can be tilt adjusted for its viewing angle. The cluster is an extension of TVS’ X Connect OS and now runs the NavPro UI, which has in-built maps from Here Maps to offer offline navigation capabilities.
The TVS X comes powered by 4.4kWh battery pack with a range of up to 140km with a single rider. The battery offers fast charging capabilities as well and can be charged to 50 percent in 50 minutes. The battery will power an 11kW peak power motor that drives the rear wheel by a belt to offer a claimed top speed of 105kph, and a 0-20kph time of 2.6 seconds.
The company says that the TVS X has been completely vertically integrated in terms of its electronic and software architecture, with everything developed and designed in-house. The company will also manufacture the motor of the TVS X in-house.
According to Sudarshan Venu, Managing Director, TVS Motor Company, “With our Reimagine 2030 Vision, our goal is to transform the quality of life through aspirational and sustainable products. The X is a unique product and our objective was to design a pathbreaking electric scooter that is aspirational and also sets the vision of TVS for the future.”
“The number of people in India who have become aspirational and want to have an intuitive, and exciting experience, is growing at a rapid pace, and the X will target such buyers. We are witnessing rapid growth in EV sales, and expect our EV volumes to double to 40 percent by 2025,” Venu said.
“We have big plans for not just the domestic market but also for exports with the X,” Venu signed off.
