Central Delhi’s traffic is expected to encounter disruptions this weekend as the Delhi Police gears up for a comprehensive dress rehearsal in preparation for the G20 Summit scheduled on September 9-10. To align with the strategies outlined for the actual event, diversions will be implemented at key points, and authorities will release a route advisory in the coming days.
A senior officer told TOI that the rehearsal is likely to take place on both Saturday and Sunday. “A day prior to the rehearsal, we will provide an advisory to help commuters plan their travels accordingly,” the officer stated.
The complete dress rehearsal will unfold along the exact routes designated for the summit. These routes will span from the airport to the accommodation of the attending delegates, onward to the summit venue, and finally leading to Raj Ghat. An officer explained, “This exercise serves as a comprehensive practice run, mirroring the exact conditions of the upcoming summit.”
Adding further insight, another officer clarified that the rehearsal would last for a few hours and would involve strategically orchestrated diversions for buses. However, metro services are anticipated to remain unaffected. “Considering the weekend, we anticipate reduced traffic on the roads,” the officer noted.
Emphasizing the importance of real-time updates, a senior officer mentioned that the Delhi Traffic Police has established a G20 virtual helpdesk. This platform is designed to provide instant updates during the summit and offer route recommendations for travel to and from the airport, railway stations, and interstate bus terminals.
The G20 Summit will be held in New Delhi at the newly built Bharat Mandapam Convention Centre in Pragati Maidan. The traffic near this region will be controlled.
