Vehicular population of Nagpur city has crossed 20.08 lakh mark. As per 2011 census, human population of the city was 24,05,665. During the first tree census in 2011, the Nagpur Municipal Corporation had counted 21,43,838 trees within corporation limits.
As on July 31, 2023 the total vehicular population of Nagpur city has crossed 20,08,564 which includes 15.94 lakh two-wheelers, 3.49 lakh four-wheelers and 33,887 autorickshaws. The number of total electric vehicles registered with city RTO and deputy RTO east offices reached 26,523.
The rise in vehicular population and existing road infrastructure is resulting into traffic congestion across many busy thoroughfares.
An official from NMC’s PWD (roads) said the road capacity has remained the same as it was half a decade ago. The total length of roads in the city is around 3549.26 km of roads.
Demand for electric vehicles have witnessed a northward trend in Nagpur city in the first four months of 2023-24 financial year. Data obtained from transport department office revealed that share of electric vehicles from April 1, 2023 to July 31, 2023 is around 20.61% of total new vehicles registered in both city and east offices. Of the 22,824 new vehicles, 4,705 were electric.
The data further revealed that 3,115 were electric two-wheelers, 167 e four-wheelers, 1,264 e-autorickshaws. Similarly, 12,487 petrol driven 2-wheelers, 967 diesel run cars, 3,697 petrol fuelled cars, 206 autorickshaws ply by gas, 116 CNG vehicles including both four-wheelers and autorickshaws.
Till March 31, the percentage of total e-vehicles was around 1.09% of total 19,85,740 vehicular population, which comes to around 21,732, while number of petrol fuelled vehicle was 17.65 lakh while 1.96 lakh were diesel run.
The demand for e-vehicles has also increased showrooms in the city. There are around 26 showrooms in the city which are selling e-vehicles ranging from e-bikes, e-rickshaws to e-cars.
Even to promote e-vehicles, in September 2022 the then municipal commissioner Radhakrishnan B had announced 2% rebate in the property tax to housing societies and individuals for setting up charging stations for electric vehicles. The NMC had introduced the scheme citing Maharashtra government’s Electric Vehicles Policy. So, far none of the citizens availed the tax rebate for this, said an NMC official.
