Shortly before the start of the IAA motor show in Munich, BMW boss Oliver Zipse sharply criticizes German industrial policy. “I think the political requirement to stop combustion engines is negligent,” he says in an interview with the Handelsblatt.
Zipse fears that there will be no comprehensive infrastructure for e-cars in Europe by 2035. In addition, there was a lack of raw materials such as lithium, cobalt and rare earths for the mass construction of electric cars. “Outwardly, Europe is open to political blackmail because we are dependent on the supply of raw materials,” he says.
At the IAA, BMW wants to give a preview of the “new class” electric models that are to be launched on the market from 2025. Zipse promises 30 percent more range and 30 percent faster charging.
