India stands out as the third of the most affordable countries to charge an EV, revealed a recent comprehensive study by Compare the Market Australia, an Australian price comparison website.
The research, which spanned across 50 countries comparing EV charging and fuel costs and used the most current model of the Hyundai Kona to compare costs, as it comes in both a traditional petrol and a pure electric version.
The study revealed that Indian EV owners spend just USD 0.95 per 100 km compared to countries like Denmark and Italy that are charging their citizens US USD 7.49 in electricity for every 100 kms driven. While Indian EV drivers save a whopping 88.26% per km, Italy provides the least savings when comparing EV costs against petrol expenses. This places India second in terms of percentage savings.
Asia, contrastingly, appears to be leading in affordable EV infrastructure. Apart from India, Malaysia, the UAE, and Vietnam also featured in the top five for EV charging affordability. Argentina emerged as the global leader, costing its drivers a mere USD 0.46 for every 100 kilometers on an EV charge. Argentinean EV drivers experience a colossal saving of 92.59% compared to those using traditional fuel vehicles.
On average, charging an EV is one-third the cost of refueling a petrol-driven vehicle. While EVs typically cost about USD 3.23 per 100 kilometers, their petrol counterparts set drivers back by approximately USD 9.18.
Head of Energy at Compare the Market, Meredith O’Brien, said that driving an EV is a great way to help reduce your carbon footprint while also saving money on your fuel bills.
O’Brien also explained that if you have solar panels, charging your EV during the day whenever possible can help offset the electricity cost of running an electric vehicle.
